M-audio Trigger Finger Tutorial, How-to Guide and Help!

Introduction:

This tutorial will in less than 1/2 hour show you everything you need to know to be very happy with your trigger finger purchase. For those of you who are wondering, my setup consists of a Trigger Finger, Cubase Sx3 and Native Instruments Komplete (I use Battery 3 with my Trigger Finger the most).

When I first bought my Trigger Finger I was excited to get it up and running as soon as I got home. Within moments I got more and more frustrated. I resorted to reading the manual and it actually made it worse. I then let my Trigger Finger sit for a while and found other ways to record my drums (through my keyboard mostly). I finally had enough time on my hands to take the time to figure it out and took personal notes to remember how to do everything. This Trigger Finger tutorial is my notes in html.

If someone would have showed this to me when I bought my Trigger Finger, it would have saved hours of frustration. Thoughts of returning the unit, thoughts of smashing my Trigger Finger (officespace movie) etc...

Step 1: Getting to Know the Hardware

For sake of getting you up and running as quickly as possible, we want you to forget about the sliders and knobs on the trigger finger. You will need to know the locations of the following:

  • The 4 Control Pads (below the LED)
  • The LED Display
  • The 16 Pads
  • The 1 knob to set note values (furthest knob to the left, directly right of the LED)

Next Steps:

  • Be sure you have your trigger finger installed (with enigma) and connected to your computer
  • Go through each of the 4 sections and enjoy how clear and quick you are up and running
  • Let me know if it helped you.

Other Trigger Finger Hints/Tips:

In Enigma, I name my presets using the drum kit name. It is very helpful for identifying which presets are for which kits.

I use Native Instruments Battery 3, the software is excellent and works very well with trigger finger.

On the Trigger Finger hardware, I turn on the "Full/Lock/Velocity" button to hear the samples easily and then edit the velocities in Cubase Sx3.

On the Trigger Finger hardware, I turn on the Ctrl/Note Mute - so trigger finger does not send any other midi control data while I am recording. I use trigger finger as a recording tool (not a live instrument) so it makes it easier to use and work in cubase if I do not send any midi controller data.
